Our hearts are heavy as we honor and remember the remarkable life of Charles Arthur “Cap” Pennell (KE6AFE)—a beloved friend, mentor, and true cornerstone of our regional amateur radio and emergency communications family.
Cap was so much more than an extraordinary operator; he was the steady hand and warm voice that kept our entire Monterey Bay region connected. As a deeply dedicated Board Member of the Monterey Bay Amateur Radio Association (MBARA), Cap poured his heart, leadership, and technical vision into preserving and growing the historic Mighty N6IJ Superstation. He didn’t just build infrastructure—he built a home for radio experimentation, fellowship, and public service.
His devotion knew no boundaries. Serving as a District Emergency Coordinator, Cap worked tirelessly through raging storms and severe infrastructure failures, making sure our mountain communities in Santa Cruz County were never left isolated in the dark. Whether he was leading volunteer nets, comforting a nervous student in a licensing class, or sharing his endless wisdom with a new operator, Cap embodied the very best of who we strive to be.
To Cap: Thank you for keeping the airwaves clear, our communities safe, and our spirits lifted. Your signal may have gone quiet, but the legacy of your kindness, service, and passion will echo through our community forever.
